About Parque Natural de las Dunas de Liencres y Costa Quebrada

Parque Natural de las Dunas de Liencres y Costa Quebrada spans a dramatic stretch of the Cantabrian coastline blending expansive sand dunes, rugged cliffs, and hidden coves. Located between the municipalities of Piélagos and the outskirts of Santander, this natural park preserves diverse habitats ranging from coastal dune systems and marine terraces to coastal heath and pine forests. The park’s dunes are some of the most important dune fields in northern Spain, formed and continuously shaped by Atlantic winds and tides. Costa Quebrada, meaning 'Broken Coast,' features spectacular geological formations with contrasting red sandstone cliffs and crystalline beaches, attracting geologists and photographers for its striking scenery. Birdlife thrives here, including species such as the European bee-eater, peregrine falcon, and various migratory seabirds, making it ideal for birdwatching. The park’s beaches, such as Valdearenas and Canallave, are popular for walking, surfing, and picnicking. Numerous trails pass through the area, offering panoramic views of the Bay of Biscay and access to secluded wildlife observation points. The natural park was formally designated to protect these fragile ecosystems and to promote sustainable recreation. Visitors can also learn about the local cultural history including traditional fishing villages nearby. With easy proximity to Santander and good access from the A-8 highway, Parque Natural de las Dunas de Liencres y Costa Quebrada offers a peaceful coastal escape combining ecological richness with outdoor adventure.
